Quick Tips for Choosing All Mountain Snowboards

We’ve compiled the following quick tips to help you understand the important aspects to be focused on while researching all mountain snowboards.  If you would like more detailed information check out our Buying Guide: How to Choose Snowboards.

  1. Beginner Rider: Choose a medium flexing board with a rocker profile between your feet.  These boards are easier for new riders to learn on because you’re less likely to catch an edge.  For more information check out this article: Best Beginner Snowboards.
  2. Intermediate – Advanced Rider: Consider medium to stiff boards with hybrid-rocker or camber profiles if you like to charge hard and want the capability to make more powerful turns.
  3. Length: As a starting point look for a board that extends from the ground up to your chin. Then check the manufacturers website to make sure it is compatible with your weight. Then size up or down based on your weight range.
  4. Width: Boot sizes smaller than 7 (US Men) should consider narrow versions of snowboards if available.  Boot sizes larger than 10.5 should consider wide versions of boards if available.
  5. Shape: Choose a directional board if you’re primarily going to be riding in one direction.  Go for a twin shape if you like to ride in the opposite direction (switch) often or if you’re a little more freestyle focused.
  6. Edge Grip Tech: Consider a board with extra contact points on the edge for improved grip in firm snow and icy conditions.  Different manufacturers have their own marketing names for this and you may see terms like Magne-Traction, Frostbite, Grip Tech, or others. All are fairly effective.
  7. Try it On: Set up all your gear ahead of your snowboard trip.  Make sure your bindings are compatible with your board and boots and take the time to make sure everything is adjusted properly.

OVERVIEW

The Lib Tech Travis Rice Pro is a true twin all mountain beast with the chops to power your freestyle ambitions up to your limits and beyond.  It’s got Lib Tech’s C2 profile shape which is a rocker/camber hybrid.  The shape is rocker between your feet that transitions to camber zones at the bindings.  It comes equipped with a specially designed Magne-Traction edge with varying degrees of serration depths to optimize the edge hold and control across multiple surface conditions.

PROS

  • Construction uses a blend of materials to produce a lightweight, durable, and powerful board
  • Magne-Traction for great grip in icy conditions
  • Lightweight true twin design is well suited to freestyle
  • Rocker/Camber hybrid profile improves float in powder
  • Available in a blunt jib nose and a pointy pow nose

CONS

  • Being a true twin you may have to adjust form/stance slightly to keep nose up while riding deeper pow
  • Medium-Stiff flex may be a bit much for those doing a lot of jibbing/pressing

BOTTOM LINE

It’s got Travis Rice’s name on it and he’s used it to shred beyond the limits of us mere mortals. But don’t let that deter you from choosing this as a top all mountain snowboard.  The tech and design features are all packed in there for intermediate to advanced riders to have great performance on the mountain from top to bottom.

2. Jones Mountain Twin Snowboard Review

Last update on 2024-03-28 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

OVERVIEW

The Jones Mountain Twin is a directional all mountain twin. Jeremy Jones made it easy for us to understand the intent of the board by assigning “mountain twin” as the name of the board. Thanks Jeremy!

The shape profile is designed with camber between the legs and rocker sections toward the tip/tail. The bindings are slightly setback making this board directional but overall the profile is symmetrical so you should have little problem riding switch with this all mountain beast.

PROS

  • The blended camber/rocker shape profile results in a nice blend of power and playfulness
  • Symmetrical twin directional shape allows great performance in both directions and the slight setback will make it a little easier to float in powder
  • Medium stiff flex (7/10 Jones Scale) combined with a mellow Magne-Traction® results in a board with solid pop for ollies and good power/traction for carving

CONS

  • The directional (slight binding setback) may throw off those doing a lot of spinning and advanced freestyle tricks
  • You don’t get to select the base color but the simple graphic looks great in all color combinations to me

BOTTOM LINE

A great choice for the intermediate to advanced rider looking for a solid blend of features with the guts to provide power carving turns in all conditions with just enough rocker toward the tips to make spinning and park rides quite doable.

OVERVIEW

Burton’s Custom Flying V is a classic all mountain snowboard.  They’ve continued to tweak it over the years and it remains a solid choice for the all mountain rider. Overall this is a hybrid rocker shape so you get an up curve between the legs but then there are small camber zones as you move toward your feet to set up your tip/tail contact points.  This shape results in less catch while still balancing that with some camber under your feet enabling more powerful turn capability than you would see with a pure rocker board.

PROS

  • Classic directional shape giving a bit more power in the tail and better float
  • Channel binding mounting system so you can precisely dial in your stance
  • Medium flexing board giving a good balance between pop, power, and spinability
  • Frostbite edges (Burton’s version of Magne-Traction) help give a little extra grip in icy conditions

CONS

  • Hybrid rocker shape may not give desired power for serious carvers
  • May need an adaptor to use bindings with Burton’s channel system.

BOTTOM LINE

A solid all mountain ride with a balance between power and playfulness.  If you are looking for something right in the middle then this could be the right choice for you.
